Group G

INTRODUCTION: The idea originated from a brainstorm on biological themes in the bathroom. Out of the ideas we came up with water temperature as the most intresting. We narrowed down this idea to perception of water temperature, as this is important in the bathroom to determine the suitability of bath water.
Initally we planned to determine whether conditioning had an influence on one's perception of a fixed
temperature ( tap water).
This was to be carried out by having people guess the temperature of the tap water, before and after placing their hands in either very hot or very cold water. Our plan was to determine thus, whether there was a difference between people's first and second estimates, and therefore whether conditioning had an effect on perceiving temperature.

However, this plan was changed and we decided to carry it out differently. we filled two water baths, one with hot and one with cold water ( labelling them A and B) and asked individuals to guess the temperature. These were seperated into 2 groups: one gruop had had forewarning, while the other had not.

AIM: To determine whether forewarning effects a persons perception of water temperature.

EQUIPTMENT:
  • X2 water baths
  • X2 thermometer
  • Ice
                                METHOD:
     1) Set 1 water bath at 40°C and another at 10°C

     2) Ask the individual to place a finger into the colder water bath for 2 seconds, and guess the temperature.
     3) Repeat step 2 having the person place another finger into the other (warmer) water bath, and again guess the temperature.
     4) Repeat steps 2 and 3 using more individuals and record  the estimated temperatures.
     5) Repeat steps 2 and 3 using water baths of 50°C and 5°C and then 60°C and 5°C.
     6) Repeat stpes 1 to 5 telling the individuals that the temperature of the water bath is either very hot or very cold, before they place their finger in the water bath.
